As a gynecologist, my goal throughout the years has been to maintain good health. Obviously, this is important to all women, but today many are now concerned about appearance. Recently, through technological advances and medical research, I am now able to offer many new procedures that help alleviate these problems.
LASER TECHNOLOGY
A laser is nothing more than a focused light beam. In cosmetic procedures, the YAG laser energy is attracted to melanin - which gives hair and skin structures color. The YAG laser is useful for several conditions.
1. Hair Removal
The YAG laser energy is attracted to the melanin in the actively growing hair follicle. At any point in time, a certain percentage of hair follicles are in the actively growing phase. Therefore, when laser is performed, the active follicles are disabled. This means that after several treatments (usually a month apart), the majority of the hair follicles in the treated area have been destroyed and permanent hair reduction has been achieved. This can be used on almost any part of the body.
2. Vein Therapy
The laser energy causes the blood in the vein to coagulate, eventually destroying the vessel, which is later reabsorbed. This modality has many uses — from small facial spider veins,to larger blue leg veins and up to port wines stains.
3. Laser Genesis
This procedure effectively treats fine line wrinkles, large pores, uneven skin texture, diffuse redness and scars. This works by stimulating collagen formation to even out skin and by heating the capillaries to reduce redness. Laser Genesis, in combination with Microdermabrasion, is effective in facial rejuvenation.
MICRODERMABRASION
The microdermabrasion system delivers small crystals that remove the more superficial aging skin cells. This allows the younger, deeper cells to come to the surface sooner and gives a more youthful appearance. This is very useful in uneven skin surfaces and scarring. This also stimulates collagen formation, thereby reducing fine wrinkles.
BOTOX®
In order for a muscle to contract, it must be stimulated by a nerve. This is accomplished by the release of a chemical substance called “acetylcholine”. The acetylcholine is released from the nerve, and it travels to the muscle - which causes it to contract.
Botox® blocks the release of acetylcholine, and the muscle cannot contract. Botox® is effective in relaxing voluntary muscles that cause wrinkles on the forehead, frown lines and crows feet. It usually takes about three months for the nerve endings to regenerate and to begin to release acetylcholine again. Therefore, treatments need to be repeated every three months.
